May Virtue: Confidence
This month‟s virtue is confidence. Confidence is having faith in someone. Self-confidence is trusting that you have what it takes to handle whatever happens. You feel sure of yourself and enjoy trying new things without letting doubts or fears hold you back. When you have confidence in others, you rely on them. Through our collective focus on Math this year, we have been working to develop the confidence in ourselves and others as mathematicians and as learners of Math. We have discovered that a simple change of words can alter our way of thinking from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. For example, instead of saying “I give up”, we can say “I‟ll use some of the strategies I‟ve learned”. Or, instead of saying “I‟m not good at this”, we can say “I‟m on the right track”.
“With confidence, you have won before you have started.” ~ Marcus Garvey
“The most beautiful thing you can wear is confidence.” ~ Blake Lively
