Today the students conducted two science experiments to learn more about how penguins stay warm in cold icy weather. In the first experiment students learned how oil from the penguins gland helps keep their feathers dry. Students covered a finger with Vaseline and then submerged the finger in cold water. Ask me what I observed when I took my finger out of the water. ( The Vaseline caused the water to repel off my finger.)

In the second experiment the students put one hand in a "blubber" glove before submerging it in the cold water. The other hand went directly into the cold water. Ask me what it felt like to have one bare hand submerged in cold water and the other hand placed in the glove.

Once the students completed the experiments they drew diagrams and  recorded the results.

Students placed our classroom penguins in order according to height.

Are these penguins in order from largest to smallest? Which penguins are in the wrong place?

Are they in the right order now?

The students continue to work on subitizing.
